Yuka for your wallet

Thomas and I made a bet.

We met at lunch last week and started talking about Yuka. What this mobile app does is to let you scan the barcode of things you want to buy in supermarkets. But no, it won’t tell you if you can buy them elsewhere cheaper: It will tell you if it contains harmful ingredients, for you or for the planet.

So that's already pretty cool in itself, and sure enough, Yuka's popularity is growing fast (15M users in just 2 years).

Now, what if this could tell you, based on all of your purchases (and not just what you are scanning in a supermarket), if your carbon footprint is good or bad, and what you could do to make it better? That seems technically doable thanks to new European regulations, forcing banks to provide API to fetch your transactions records, under your consent obviously. And another set of regulation forcing companies with a significant turnover to calculate and disclose their carbon footprint.

He says the Original Yuka will have deeper engagement (I scan weekly when I shop), and willingness to pay (If I think food or cosmetic companies may compromise on ingredients and sacrify my health to boost they profit, the 14 EUR annual subscription may look very reasonable)

I say fair enough, "Yuka for your wallet" will have lower engagement (2 or 3 checks over a few months, then forget about it), but more virality, as I suspect showing you fight for climate can be used by some as a social badge on social media, while protecting my personal health may feel more private.

So my bet is that "Yuka for you wallet" will make less money, but will reach more people, who will be more vocal than the audience of the original Yuka. And that "Yuka for your wallet" will create a stronger positive change in the industry (one of the stated goal from the original Yuka)

On this one, we could get a bit more hands on, and build + promote a landing page and start measuring traction. Fancy changing the world and have some fun experimenting online ? Hit reply and tell me you are on this one!
