You never want a serious crisis to go to waste

These words were spoken in 2008 by Emanuel Rahm, one of president Obama’s advisor. He said that crisis were opportunities to do things that you think you could not do before. That struck me at the time, and that came back front of mind this week, as sure enough, COV19 is a big crisis. One that will put us, human beings, in front of our collective ability to mitigate the impact of a global pandemic.

I trust you are all doing your best to implement social distancing, as this can only work if everyone plays its part. And assuming you do so, why don’t we try to look for a bright side in this time of our lives?

For me it goes like that: I’m lucky enough to be able to work from home, almost as well as from any office. So the hour I’ll save from the daily commute will be spent on quality time with my wife and kids.

I’m as well lucky to be on the payroll of a large company at the moment, so no cash/business survival situation here. They hired me to build a new business for them, from scratch, as an “intrapreneur”.

We are cash rich and really under-leveraged, debt wise. But as a listed company in the Travel sector, our stock value is down 45% since the crisis started. COV19 will as well be an economic bloodbath, and many companies, big or small, will go under in the coming months.

But it' s very possible that COV19 will enable us to buy great companies at a much better price that just a few weeks ago: So these days, I'm making new friends in the M&A team. Via video conf obviously...

And you, once survival is sorted, how will you make the most of this crisis?
